CoolSculpting

Get rid of stubborn fat

Many of us are all too familiar with those stubborn pockets of fat that appear on the body. Whether they are on your hips, belly or thighs, they can be very upsetting. After all, no one likes it when they can’t fit into their old jeans anymore. Exercise and a healthy diet are ways to reduce these fat deposits.

CoolSculpting is another. It is an external treatment method that uses cold to freeze certain fat cells in targeted body areas.

The combination of all three methods – diet, exercise and CoolSculpting – is a very effective way of getting back to your ideal figure and getting rid of unwanted fat deposits.

Method

How does CoolSculpting work?

CoolSculpting is the brand name of the world’s leading cryolipolysis device and method. Cryolipolysis means freezing away the excess pounds.

During the cryolipolysis procedure, the device uses cold to damage fat cells under the skin. They freeze, die and are then permanently removed by the body’s lymphatic system over the course of the following days and weeks.

The areas to be treated are suctioned and drastically cooled using appropriately-sized applicators to fit the corresponding fat deposit. A special fluid protects the skin from the cold during this non-invasive fat removal procedure.

Usually, the only side effect of this fat removal treatment is external and reversible numbness. Patients describe cryolipolysis as virtually pain-free. Treating one fat deposit with CoolSculpting usually takes 30 to 50 minutes.

Get rid of fat!

Which areas of the body can be treated with CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting reduces unwanted fat deposits on the hips, stomach, arms, bottom, under the chin and on the legs. Some of the most commonly treated areas are a big belly, love handles and “saddlebag” thighs. However, it can also reduce fat on the inner thighs and hips.

Numerous studies have shown that cryolipolysis (the procedure that CoolSculpting uses) reduces fat deposits by 20 to 40 percent. The result is visible after two to three months on average. Because it is impossible to target specific fat deposits with diet and exercise, non-surgical fat removal with Coolsculpting is an effective and lasting way to get the figure you want. It helps you contour your body and achieve curves in all the right places. Goodbye, love handles!

Patient satisfaction

How satisfied are our patients with the results?

“My patients are very satisfied with the results of cryotherapy for fat removal. The method is tried and tested. They particularly appreciate that several areas of the body can be treated with just one CoolSculpting session.”

Innovation

How long has CoolSculpting been around?

CoolSculpting was invented in the late 1990s by the German dermatologist Dr Dieter Manstein, who lived and worked in the United States.

Together with his colleague Dr R. Rox Anderson, he discovered the cryolipolysis procedure: a way of freezing away excess pounds. He brought it to market under the name CoolSculpting. Dr Manstein now works at Harvard Medical School, alongside other institutions. He completed his residency in dermatology and his doctorate in physics and lasers at the University of Münster in Germany.

Advantages

What are the advantages of CoolScultping compared to other weight loss methods such as liposuction?

The main advantage of CoolSculpting over liposuction is that it is a non-invasive treatment: fat reduction without surgery. By contrast, liposuction is an procedure that requires anesthesia, causes large wound areas and pain, and takes a significant period of time to recover from.

With CoolSculpting, there is no downtime. Patients can get up and go home immediately after each treatment, and carry on with work and exercise as normal.

  • No surgery
  • No wound infections
  • No downtime
  • No surgical risk
  • Virtually no pain
  • Costs less than surgery

Risks

What are the risks and side effects?

After the treatment, some bruising (haematoma), may occur due to the firm suction of the applicators. In some cases, the skin on the treated areas of the body may feel temporarily numb, or become red or swollen. These side effects rarely last longer than a few days. A very rare side effect of the procedure, which famously happened to former supermodel Linda Evangelista, is “paradoxical adipose hyperplasia”. This is estimated to occur in around 1 in 20,000 patients treated. The cause has not yet been researched. Fortunately, I have never had a case of this in my practice, even after many years of using the device.

Pregnant women and new mothers should only start treatment after the end of the breastfeeding period. In addition, CoolSculpting is not recommended for the treatment of severe overweight or obesity.

Before treatment with the CoolSculpting procedure, a one-to-one consultation is highly recommended, especially for people with pre-existing conditions and physical impairments.

My advice

As a doctor, what I recommend to patients who want to reduce their weight, optimise their figure and remove specific fat deposits is a combination of healthy eating, exercise and innovative technology-based medicine such as CoolSculpting for effective, lasting results.

CoolSculpting has been helping patients reduce fat without surgery for several years. The method (cryolipolysis) is a tried and tested way to remove unwanted fat and is used worldwide. After treatment, patients can resume their normal activities straight away without restrictions. You can even do exercise on the same day after a CoolSculpting treatment.

One important thing to bear in mind: CoolSculpting doesn’t give you a free pass to eat all the chocolate you want. Although the fat cells removed by the treatment are gone forever, the remaining fat cells can still expand. If you would like to find out more, I would be happy to arrange a personal consultation.

FAQs – Frequently asked questions

Liposuction is not to be taken lightly. It is actually a surgical procedure, and some surgeons downplay its seriousness. The operation creates large wounds and causes considerable pain. You will not be able to work or exercise for a few days after this operation.

CoolSculpting is a purely external procedure. That means it is a non-invasive, virtually pain-free treatment. You can walk, drive and work again straight after the treatment. There is no downtime at all. CoolSculpting also involves none of the risks associated with surgery, such as wound infections.

The cryolipolysis system was developed in the 1990s. The device was first launched on the European market under the name Zeltiq. We have been working with the original device for over 10 years, have very satisfied patients and have not experienced any serious complications to date.

The body loses fat when we consume more than we take in. Therefore, we can only lose weight if we take in less energy with our food than we burn. However, the unfortunate reality of fat loss is that you often first loose fat in the places where you would like to keep it, and the annoying fat deposits that you don’t want virtually never disappear. I therefore always recommend a combination of a calorie-reduced diet, exercise and treatment with CoolSculpting.

Liposuction is a procedure in which fat is sucked out of the body.
