How does IPL hair removal work?

IPL laser hair removal begins with a thorough skin cleanse and the application of a cooling gel. This gel protects the skin and ensures the laser beam operates optimally and precisely. We cover any birthmarks or moles with a white pencil to protect them. Both patients and our staff wear protective eyewear to shield their eyes from the light.

Once you’re in a comfortable position, we guide the laser over the target areas. The light beam is absorbed by the dark hair follicles while leaving the surrounding skin unharmed.

Laser hair removal is highly effective and typically takes only a few minutes, depending on the area being treated, such as the face. Achieving the best results usually requires multiple sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. This is because hair follicles are in various growth phases, and the laser can only destroy hairs that are in the active growth phase.

After each session, all you have to do is avoid direct sunlight on the treated areas and keep the skin moisturised by applying a good amount of skincare cream.

What are the risks and side effects?

Slight redness may occur during the treatment, but this usually fades quickly on its own. Applying a light cooling agent, such as a nourishing, moisturising cream, after each session helps the skin recover and relax.

It’s crucial to avoid direct sunlight after each treatment and throughout the entire treatment period. This precaution ensures the success of the therapy and prevents it affecting the wrong skin cells.

For instance, we cover birthmarks and moles with a white pencil to prevent the cells in those areas from undergoing any undesirable changes.

The discomfort level of the treatment itself ranges from painless to slightly unpleasant, depending on the area being treated and individual sensitivity, but all our patients tolerate it well. The duration of treatment varies depending on the size of the area. For example, a delicate female upper lip may take just a minute, while a large male leg could require up to an hour.

My advice

As with all laser treatments, IPL hair removal works best when the skin is as light as possible, meaning it should not be tanned. The treatment is only effective when targeting dark hair.

Can heavily pigmented or dark-skinned people have IPL hair removal treatment?

People who have just got a sun tan must not be treated under any circumstances. However, if your normal skin type is somewhat darker, we can adjust the device settings accordingly. We will start with a lower energy output and adjust as needed.

Does IPL hair removal hurt?

How you experience the treatment will depend on the area of skin treated and your sensitivity. Generally, thinner areas of skin close to bone structures tend to be more painful to treat than areas with more muscle or fatty tissue underneath.

How long does the effect of IPL hair removal last?
